What is Apple Hide My Email?
Apple lets people create unique, random email addresses when signing up for apps and websites. Emails sent to these addresses are forwarded through Apple's relay servers to the person's real inbox, keeping the actual email address private.
These addresses look something like dpdcnf87gw@privaterelay.appleid.com.
There are two versions of this feature:
- Hide My Email (iCloud+): Available to any iCloud+ subscriber. These relay addresses generally deliver fine without any extra configuration.
- Sign in with Apple: Available to apps and websites that integrate Apple's sign-in SDK. These relay addresses require the app developer to register Tremendous's sending domain in their Apple Developer Portal. If they don't, Apple will reject our emails.
Why the email bounced
The most common causes depend on how the recipient created their relay address.
If the recipient used Sign in with Apple (most common cause of bounces):
- Your app hasn't registered Tremendous's sending domain with Apple. If your app or website uses Sign in with Apple, you need to register Tremendous's email domain in your Apple Developer Portal so Apple's relay accepts our reward emails. See the steps below.
For all private relay addresses:
- The recipient turned off forwarding. They may have disabled email forwarding for the relay address they provided.
- The relay address was deleted. The recipient removed the Hide My Email address from their Apple account.
- The daily limit was reached. Each private relay address is limited to 100 emails per day.
What you can do
| Action | When to use |
|---|---|
| Register Tremendous's domain with Apple | If your app uses Sign in with Apple and you haven't done this yet. One-time setup. |
| Update the email address | If you have the recipient's direct email address. |
| Ask the recipient to check their Apple settings | If you can reach them another way. Share the instructions below. |
| Resend the email | After registering the domain, or if the issue was temporary (e.g., daily limit). |
| Cancel the reward | If the recipient is unreachable and the reward is no longer needed. |
To take action on a failed delivery, go to Orders & rewards > Reward history, filter by Failed deliveries, and select the reward.
Register Tremendous's sending domain with Apple
If your app or website uses Sign in with Apple, you need to register Tremendous's sending domain in your Apple Developer Portal. This is a one-time setup that allows Apple's relay to accept reward emails from Tremendous.
You'll need access to your organization's Apple Developer account.
Add the sending domain:
- In Certificates, Identifiers & Profiles, select Services in the sidebar.
- Select Configure under Sign in with Apple for Email Communication.
- In the Email Sources section, select the add button (+).
- Add the following domain:
em6429.reward.tremendous.com - Select Next, confirm, then select Register.
Add the sending email address:
- On the same configuration page, select the add button (+).
- Add this email address:
rewards@reward.tremendous.com - Select Next, confirm, then select Register.
After registering, Apple will verify that the domain passes SPF authentication. Once confirmed, resend the failed reward.
For full details on Apple's requirements, see Apple's guide: Configure private email relay service.
Using custom SMTP? If you send reward emails from your own domain instead of Tremendous's default, you'll need to register your own sending domain and email addresses instead of the ones listed above.
Instructions to share with the recipient
If the sending domain is already registered and the bounce persists, the issue is on the recipient's side. If you can reach them through another channel, share these steps:
On iPhone or iPad:
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Sign in with Apple (or iCloud > Hide My Email).
- Find the app or website associated with the relay address.
- Confirm Forward To is set to an active email address.
On Mac:
- Open System Settings and select your name.
- Select Sign in with Apple (or iCloud > Hide My Email).
- Find the relay address and confirm forwarding is enabled.
On the web:
- Go to appleid.apple.com and sign in.
- Select Sign-In and Security > Sign in with Apple.
- Find the relay address and confirm it's active.
If the recipient no longer has the relay address, ask them for a direct email address and update the reward.
FAQ
Does this affect all clients?
No. This only affects clients whose recipients use Sign in with Apple to create accounts. If your recipients use iCloud+'s Hide My Email feature (not tied to an app), reward emails typically deliver without any extra setup.
Do I need to do anything if I don't use Sign in with Apple?
No. If your recipients aren't signing into your app with Apple, their relay addresses should work fine with Tremendous's default email delivery.
Can I prevent this from happening?
Register Tremendous's sending domain with Apple before sending rewards to relay addresses. If you're collecting email addresses for rewards, you can also ask recipients for a direct email address.
Will resending fix the problem?
Only if the underlying issue was resolved first. If you registered the domain or the recipient re-enabled forwarding, resending should work. Otherwise it will bounce again.
How do I know if an email is an Apple Private Relay address?
These addresses end in @privaterelay.appleid.com. Tremendous flags them in the delivery failure details.
