Reward options in East Asia

Using Tremendous, you can send rewards to recipients located throughout East Asia. This guide covers product availability, localization considerations, and restrictions within the region.

Available products in East Asia

Depending on where your recipients are located within East Asia, you can send them prepaid Visa cards, gift cards, monetary payouts, or charity donations. Learn more about each product type’s regional coverage below.

  • The Virtual Visa card can be sent to recipients located in Japan, Macao, Mongolia, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Virtual Visa card balances are stored in USD but convert to local currency when spent. Tremendous does not charge any conversion fees to your recipients.

The Virtual Visa cannot be used in China and Hong Kong. Recipients located in China and Hong Kong cannot receive Virtual Visas, and recipients in other countries who attempt to spend their Virtual Visa cards at China- and Hong Kong-based businesses will experience failed transactions.

  • Tremendous offers a variety of gift cards in East Asia. For a complete list of available gift cards by country, see our catalog.

Gift card balances are stored in local currency and can only be spent in the country or region they’re issued in. For example, an Uber Japan gift card is issued by Uber Japan and can only be used in Japan. If you want to send an Uber gift card to a recipient in Taiwan, you must send them an Uber Taiwan gift card.

  • Tremendous offers PayPal International transfers to recipients located in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Monetary payouts incur fees, which you can add to your order total or pass through to your recipients. Learn more about monetary payout fees.

  • Tremendous offers charity donation payouts to recipients located throughout East Asia. For a complete list of available charities by country, see our catalog.

Denominations

The minimum and maximum value of a reward sent to East Asia depends on the country you're sending to and the specific payout the recipient wants to receive. Download the complete reward catalog for a detailed breakdown of available products and their minimum and maximum values.

The maximum and minimum value of each gift card is determined by the issuing merchant. Some gift cards are only available in discrete denominations, eg. 100 CNY and 200 CNY, instead of continuous denominations, eg. 100-500 CNY and everything in between. The value of a reward must match an available denomination in order to be redeemed.

For example, if you want to send a recipient 100 CNY and you know they want to redeem a Starbucks China gift card, which is only available in the amounts of 30 or 50 CNY, you may need to divide the amount into two rewards of 50 CNY each. Adding local products to campaigns

When creating or editing a campaign, you can filter the product table by location to find and add local products for a region. To the right of the product table, select the “locations covered” link to view a list of regions where at least one local product is included in your campaign.

A single campaign can be used for multiple countries and regions. During redemption, we detect the recipient’s country using their IP location and show them local redemption options only.

To learn more about adding local products to your campaigns, see:

Currency and language localization

During the order flow, you can localize your rewards by specifying a currency and language.

  • If you know where your recipients are located, you can specify their local currency. This displays the reward amount to the recipient in the specified currency both before and after redemption.

If you don’t specify a currency, Tremendous will automatically convert the reward amount to the recipient’s local currency at the time of redemption.

Whether you specify a currency or not, your order total will always be calculated and paid in your team currency. Learn more about team currencies.

  • When you specify a language, we automatically translate the reward email, text message, and landing page. This includes your campaign messaging, redemption and usage instructions, and regulatory copy. If the recipient redeems a Virtual Visa card, the card page and all transaction notifications are also translated.

To learn more about sending rewards in other currencies and languages, see:

Restrictions

Banking regulations prohibit Tremendous from sending rewards to recipients located in North Korea. Learn more about recipient restrictions.

In addition to the prohibited countries listed above, local carrier restrictions prevent us from delivering text message rewards to recipients located in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Recipients in these countries can still receive email or link rewards.
